The FA shows leadership

By: j | July 31st, 2008

I’m going to come clean with you on this. I’ve been very harsh on the FA at times as I feel on a number of occasions that haven’t provided enough leadership within England. However on the opposite side of the equation, when they take a hard-line stance for the betterment of the game, they deserve credit. And my friends, with their action today they deserve credit.

Since Newcastle’s announcement that they were effectively re-instating Joey Barton after his release from prison, I’ve been digging through my contact list trying to find out if this was a clever play on how to escape some of the massive debt burden his contract carried. Something just wasn’t right with any of this and it seemed more of the making of a press secretary doing the media spin.

However that seems like a mute point now because the FA jumped-in and charged Joey Barton with violent conduct over his assault of then Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo. Joey Barton now has two weeks to respond to the case being heard by an independent regulatory commission on a yet to be determined date. If found guilty, the FA can impose a lengthy ban of which there is no maximum sentence.

Some will disagree with this recent move by the FA and consider it too harsh but for me, it shows great leadership in protecting the image of the game and the message it has to society. Brilliant leadership!

i – Well said. Seen news that some folk think the time gap since the assault is too long. But for the FA to charge him with the criminal Court hearing ongoing would be prejudicial to his trial so ill advised. And he only admitted the offence on the day of the hearing – why did JB wait so long and plead not guilty up till then ?However, I do resent the inconsistency of the FA eg See Aladiere sent off (and suspension increasd on appeal) for violently reacting to Mascherano grabbing him round the throat who went unpunished despite clear video evidence. Or Cantona leaping into the crowd to practice his kung fu. Perhaps the FA can start again with JB and show some guts.
