Rumor: The Mags want to Sign Former AS Roma Striker Shabani Nonda

By: David | June 5th, 2007

More transfer news/rumors are starting to pour out, as it would seem that new manager Sam Allardyce wants to sign Congolese striker Shabani Nonda. Lancashire Telegraph were the first to break this news about the possible trade, as negotiations are heating up.

NEWCASTLE United are weighing up a move to scupper Mark Hughes’ bid to sign striker Shabani Nonda.

Reports on Tyneside suggest new Toon manager Sam Allardyce is keen to recruit the DR Congo international, who spent last season on loan at Ewood Park.

United were keeping tabs on Nonda last season under Glenn Roeder and, although Allardyce will have his own ideas in the transfer market, the player is still in the Magpies’ sights.

A source close to the club said: “Nonda would offer some physical presence and strength.”

Newcastle will be fighting with AS Roma and the Rovers for Nonda, who would be a great addition to the squad. It would seem that the current asking price is 2 million pounds. More to come as information because available.

This guy is one powerful striker and it would be good to see him on the roster.

What is interesting, is that Blackburn has been courting Nonda for over a month and the Mags sweep in and disrupt the trade talks. If that is any indication, than it would point out that Nonda wants to move. Let us hope that Allardyce puts up the right amount for him.

He’s not a bad player, but he just looks to be another addition to the long list of players who were huge in France but can’t fulfill their potential elsewhere.

I thought Blackburn had an option to buy with the loan agreement for 3m GBP? It’s been a foregone conclusion in Rome for sometime that he would remain there. But hey, if you guys wanna spark a bidding war, by all means…..

It is going to be a battle for Nonda, but it looks like Allardyce is going to put up more money than Blackburn. But time will tell, where Nonda decides to go.

Can’t say I’m excited by this news. 3m seems steep for Nonda who I wouldn’t consider an upgrade from Mickey, Oba, Viduka, Shola… or even Carroll.

This scares me more than anything as BSA racking up strikers may be an indication that Mickey or Oba are on their way out. Oba has expressed some discontent with Roeder’s ousting as he was the rodent’s pet project and only paid transfer that really worked out from last summer. And then there are the ongoing Mickey-to-a-big-4 rumors…

Well the biggest question I have about all of these transfers is how Ashley’s bid is going to impact it. Usually when there is takeover, the team gets rid of a ton of players, or at least curtails the amount that they bring in. But then again, this might be an indication as you pointed out of some big names leaving.

Whatever the case, there is a lot of interesting movements going on right now and I wonder how much Ashley and Allardyce are really going to work out, if Ashley is successful. I know that Allardyce has made it clear he is not happy with the potential takeover.

Rovers don’t want him anymore as he didn’t really do much for us.
