Newcastle v Liverpool match preview
By: j | December 27th, 2008Liverpool travels to St James’ Park later today in a delicate challenge for Newcastle. Sitting at twelfth place in the table, the Magpies will be hunting for points against first place Liverpool but will be greatly hampered without José Enrique, Mark Viduka and Mark Viduka all injured against Wigan and will also miss Sébastien Bassong who was red-carded in that match. Liverpool is slowly returning to health and could have sharpshooter Fernando Torres available as well as Javier Mascherano.
Joe Kinnear is more than aware of the daunting task, made more difficult with absences. While buoyed with the play of Canadian U20 David Edgar and Andy Carroll, the club will need to pull together for one of their best performances of the campaign to come out with points.
Former Anfield man, Danny Guthrie said of the match:
“We do need to get something especially being at home but we’ve done well against the big teams this year and we need to do the same again on Sunday.”
“We’ve got to be at our best and find the performance we know we can.”
“It’s always a bit of added spice playing against a former team.”
“But I’m not going to get too excited about the game and I’ll just try to treat it as a normal game and keep focused and prepare properly.”
