Match Preview: Birmingham vs NewcastleBy: Daniel | February 15th, 2011
Tonight Newcastle travel to the second city to face a tough Birmingham City side at St. Andrews for a rearrange fixture due to the earlier postponement. United are coming into the game on the back of an impressive performance against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend. On the other hand, City are coming into the game from a last gasp win against Stoke via a goal from in form Nikola Zigic.
Newcastle are set to name an unchanged side from the weekend, consequently, this means the strike force of Leon Best and Peter Lovenkrands is set to continue with other options such as Nile Ranger and Shefki Kuqi on the bench. Danny Simpson is also set to start after coming off at the end of the Blackburn game with cramp.
For Birmingham, Newcastle old boy Obafemi Martins is in contention to start after completing a six month loan deal to the Blues. Other old boys like Stephen Carr and Lee Bowyer are also set to feature. City are also a somewhat of draw specialists at home with 7 draws.
United can go into the game in high spirits not because of their recent good performances but due to their great record at St. Andrews having not lost any of their last 6 at the home of the Blues.
This rearranged game is that of high importance due to the consequence of a win for United, should it occur. Newcastle could end up overtaking Stoke into 9th and set up another big game against Bolton at home on the 26th February which could see United leap into 7th place if results go their way.
Many are expecting a close game with little goals, one can only hope that Newcastle can take the game and get three points. Howay the Lads!
