is Pablo Aimar coming to Newcastle?
By: j | July 9th, 2008
Kevin Keegan’s chances of bringing in Argentine Midfielder Pablo Aimar of the recently relegated Real Zaragoza is slowly closing as Benfica is the front-runner now. Less than a month ago many believed his arrival was a sure-thing and contractual work was a mere formality. However this has quickly changed and it will now cost a minimum of ₤6.5 – 8 m to hijack the Lisbon clubs efforts.
Pablo’s agent, Gustavo Mascardi is more than capable of drawing the best price from the market and rightfully so, using the media to emphasize offers have only been received from Panathinaikos and Benfica but waiting for an English club to step-up to the table.
Pablo is without a doubt an extremely accomplished player who would definitely have a major impact on the pitch however as you consider budgetary constraints, it seems that offers to Sebastian Larsson and Gökhan Inler are more likely to go along with the addition of Jonás Gutiérrez. This will additionally be impacted upon the possible loss of James Milner and the clubs insistence of a £9 million fee.
I will update the situation as soon as more information becomes available.

Wow, so much action since I began drinking on the 3rd and woke up today. I’m excited to see so many fresh updates on the Toon blog as the last guy just seemed to disappear as the season winded down. I believe there are very few Mags fans on the Offside, but I’m one of them and happy to see us properly represented! Thanks for taking the blog back!
Aimar’s game would be well-suited to the squad. As a dedicated Liga fan, I watched a lot of Zaragoza games (this year and in year’s past) and think Juan Pablo’s got the toughness and mental ability to play in the Prem. He’s kind of a wild card, but I think he’d do well in the Northeast. If only the warmer clime of Benfica wasn’t beckoning…

He would be a great signing for you guys. Being a Barca fan I watch a ton of liga, and I am also a huge Argentina fan, so thats more Aimar-viewing opportunities. He is really under rated, IMO. Like James said, he could definitely cut it in the premier league. And Zaragoza are relegated, so he’d come cheap, unless a bidding war started.

James & Jake: thanks for joining us and hopefully we’ll have a strong Toon Army here and we’ve only just started.
I agree with you regarding Pablo and think he would be a tremendous signing and quickly emerge in the upper ranks Premier League. I however think he is priced too high its quite obvious the squad is managing its budget very tight. His agent is doing a great job in bidding up the price by using the media as well because I think his final price will be more near the ₤8 area.

I think he would do great in the uptempo Keegan-ball system. He’s sort of like a slower Deco.
And as far as the signings that we have made/look exceedingly likely to make (Inler, Gutierrez, etc.), anybody know anything about those players?
