“I am putting the club up for sale”

By: j | September 15th, 2008

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley issued a statement noting he is selling the club:

“I’m now a dad who can’t take his kids to a football game because I am advised that we would be assaulted. I am no longer prepared to subsidise Newcastle.”

“I am putting the club up for sale. I hope the next owner is someone who can lavish the amount of money on the club that the fans want.”

“I am very conscious of the responsibility that I bear in owning Newcastle United. Tough decisions have to be made in business and I will not shy away from doing what I consider to be in the best interests of the club. This is not fantasy football.”

“I have the interests of Newcastle United at heart. I have listened to you.”

“You want me out. That is what I am now trying to do but it won’t happen overnight and it may not happen at all if a buyer does not come in.

“You don’t need to demonstrate against me again because I have got the message.”

Newcastle are not a big team. You never have been and you most probably never will be. Until as fans you get over this delusion your club is permenantly doomed as no owner or manager will ever be able to meet the demands you have of them.

Jim – I try my best not to post too many personal commentaries and simply present information with a morsel of insight. However this is all very unfortunate and not going to turn in the direction supporters were looking at.

Sheps – I know what you mean and I might argue we’re on the same path in a manner of speaking. I personally prefer regional based clubs with local ownership. I’ve written a great deal of it outside of here but it has made the Premier League a problem for me when only 35% of the players are English. I suppose the simplest way to put it is that these aren’t “clubs” anymore but “franchises” and that doesn’t sit right with me.
