”Head And Shoulders”

By: j | December 28th, 2008

Call it a Sunday afternoon gone bad but Newcastle were thoroughly trounced 5-1 by table leader Liverpool at St James’ Park. Said after the match, Joe Kinnear summarized the beating simply:

“You’ve got to take your hats off to Liverpool. Even with all the injuries, and whatever problems we had, they took full advantage of it. They were head and shoulders above us.”

Weighed down with the loss of Obafemi Martins, Mark Viduka and Sébastien Bassong, Newcastle were no match for the first place Reds and were easily turned away. And while a 5-1 drubbing is certainly not a acceptable result, in-fact without Shay Given the score would have been much worse. The Republic of Ireland international turned aside Liverpool on several occasions before Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypia scored for Liverpool at the thirty-first and thirty-sixth minute respectively. Finding the ray of sunshine in a gloomy afternoon Canadian U20 David Edgar headed Danny Guthrie’s corner in the final second of added time before the break. While Newcastle showed some intensity at the re-start, that disappeared at the fiftieth minute when Ryan Babel sent a loose ball in from a meter out. With the score now 3-1, the floodgates were opened. While Geremi struck a beautiful free kick off the cross bar near the hour mark, with twenty-four minutes remaining Steven Gerrard added his second of the match with Lucas being the provider. Xabi Alonso scored from the spot with fourteen minutes remaining as David Edgar was adjudged to fouling PSG product David N’Gog, to bring the horror show to its 5-1 conclusion.

Newcastle returns to action next Saturday against Hull City.

Agree with alessio. Given was simply awesome. N’Zogbia & Duff had a few decent runs at the Reds though. :)

Shay Given truly is incredible and as always I am very pleased to see younger players develop. While it might be a silver lining in a tough day, I was very proud to see David Edgar in the starting grid and for Kazenga LuaLua get an opportunity. Thank you for your comments.
