Day 2 of the Newcastle Blog and all I see is this Horrible Transfer for Barton

By: David | June 5th, 2007

Well then, now that I am back from my job interviews, dripping in sweat from the lack of air conditioning in my car I can start to post again. I must say that it has been quite a pleasure starting up this blog, there is more information on the internet and the community itself is quite large. Its not like doing Chivas USA, so this is definitely a shock for me.

But do not worry the shock will wear off in soon time giving way to a continued barrage of posts, insight and other things. So enough of my problems let us get into the biggest news story of the day: Joey Barton.

First pointed out to me by Martha, it would seem that the Mags have signed a five year deal with Manchester City for their cancerous midfielder; the man who continually makes a mockery of himself and the one who has a great love of cigars: Joey Barton.

I was thinking, how bad could this guy really be? Maybe there is a way to give him the benefit of the doubt and look at him as a player who over stayed his welcome at City. But then I started to read his rap sheet and look into his family history. I came to a realization that the Mags made one of the worst deals in quite awhile. Joey Barton is a cancerous player that reeks of malcontent and hatred. What was the management thinking signing Barton? OK so you had to make room for Scott Parker, but why trade for this guy?

It would seem that Barton is making an effort to change his image, or at least play to the media so that more people will like him. According to thisislondon Barton was quoted as saying,

It is disappointing that people have a certain opinion of me but I meet countless people who, in all aspects of my life, will testify ‘you’re not the person you’re made out to be’.

“At certain times I don’t do myself any favours with incidents but to make out I’m some kind of yob, some kind of psychopath for want of a better word, is so far from the truth it’s unreal.”

This sounds to me like a desperate player looking to make another pay check, while at the same time guarding his ego. For 5.5 million pounds the management could have done a better job than singing Barton, or at least could have looked for a player that would fit into the system. Now let me tell you I have been used to troubled players, just look at the mistake Chivas USA made bringing in Amado Guevara. Understandably, Guevara was not as volatile as Barton, however, Guevara was successful in bringing the entire team down.

We shall see what happens with Barton. Maybe he has learned his lesson and will now try to fit in. Yet I would not hold my breath, as he has proven to be a very unstable player throughout his career.

More to come.

I believe the vernacular is ‘transfer’ and not ‘trade’.

I just saw this pop up on a site about 5 minutes ago, you sure it’s a done deal?

“West Ham will offer Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton £1m more than Newcastle in a signing war this week.”

It looks like the Barton deal is almost complete, from everywhere I have looked most new sources are confirming this.

    Skynews
    BBC Sport
    Fox News

They are all claiming that the Barton deal is complete and that he will be with the Mags soon.

Actually, he just had a medical with Newcastle about six hours ago.

Barton is a nutter, so we’ll see how he gets on at the ‘Toon. He’s a decent player when he wants to be though, and Big Sam might just be the person to sort him out.

I’m with you Nick - BSA should be able to handle him. Afterall, he did an extraordinary job with another cancer in El Diouf at Bolton.

As I mentioned in the first post, I am all for this signing. I think Barton is twice the player that Scotty is - their skill set is similar but Barton plays with some passion and is far better in attack. Stat set:

    Barton 2006: 6 Goals / 4 Assists / 29 Shots / 32 Corners Won / 78 Successful Crosses / 54 Fouls Won
    Parker 2006: 3 Goals / 1 Assist / 15 Shots / 16 Corners Won / 5 Successful Crosses / 51 Fouls Won

AND Barton played with an otherwise feeble Citizen attack that scored a mere 10 goals at home all year! I’m excited to see what he can do when teamed with Mickey, Viduka, Oba, and Milner!!!

Barton might have the numbers and the potential, but he is still a very expensive liability. £70,000 a week is quite a lot for a player that loves to fight with his teammates.

But as you have stated Allardyce is a strong manager who should be able to control him for awhile, unless things do not go his way. It will be interesting to see what he does and Barton has come out stating that he really wants to play for the Mags and for Allardyce, so maybe that will convert into success on the pitch. I am curious to see what he will do, but at the same time I am wary of a player like Barton. If he has been “crazy” for most of his career, a change of scenery will not revolutionize his life. Yet, I have been wrong before.
