Danny Guthrie’s ban not extended after hack job

By: j | September 17th, 2008

Being upfront, I have been a out-spoken supporter of Danny Guthrie. He’s a splendid young player who I think has a solid future in-front of him and to be honest, I go out of my way to support regional development. I know that isn’t to politically correct in todays Football community but I go way back to a time when “Club” footy had more of a connection to the community. However before my typical long-winded approach lingers-on, this past weekend I was disgusted with Danny Guthrie’s challenge on Craig Fagan.

I am likely far too conservative for most and do not whimper when an athlete is suspended from sport for a criminal action. This puts me in a odd situation because as much as I want to see Danny excel in the sport and for Newcastle, I felt a tough sentence by the FA was needed. In my opinion and again, its just my opinion, these types of infractions must be dealt with sternly and I’d rather not see him on the pitch till at least Craig Fagan returns.

Matt on Hull City’s blog reported on this and I was in complete agreement with him that the FA needed to hand down a stiffer suspension.

Unfortunately they did not and by their lack of foresight the sport in England takes another knock.

Per the BBC:

“The FA doesn’t have the power to extend automatic suspensions.

“The only circumstances in which we could take any further action would be to issue an additional charge against a player.

“This occurs only in exceptional cases, such as Ben Thatcher’s challenge on Pedro Mendes in 2006.”

At some stage the FA needs to show leadership. It’s failed in the past and failed once again.

Well said J, that ‘challenge’ doesn’t a place in the game and should have been dealt swiftly and without quarter.

The FA are an increasingly ‘hands off’ organisation that prefers to deal with selling England shirts and sitting in the Wembley boxes sipping Pinot Grigio whilst uncomfortably watching disinterested millionaires go through the motions.

Simon – thanks for commenting and I’m glad you agree. We really need to have to work a lot harder on improving the game in England. I’ve had a lot of experience with the FA and they need overhaul in this aspect of the sport and to keep their hands out of commerce.

I agree with you guys. I am a Bristol City fan, so not too much of a Hull City fan after last season. Though seeing a player like Fagan doing so well on the big step up to top flight football I was seething with anger that Danny Guthrie gets a 3 match ban for something so horrific! They say it was uncharacteristic for him, but I disagree with this statement. You can call that sort of tackle uncharacteristic from a player who is 34 and never done that once. Guthrie is relatively new and that to me says thats the type of professional he is. His club is in turmoil and he thinks thats the way to act.

He said he is sorry, but that doesnt excuse what he did in my opinion. If Fagan is out for 3 months, thats just how long Guthrie should be banned for! I almost got my head caved in at a bristol city game once because I asked why everyone was clapping Bradley Orr off the pitch after his red card for punching his own team mate! How can any fan clap that sort of behaviour? And how could the Geordies clap off Guthrie and he clap back.

If I was Craig Fagan id decline the apology because its no different to the apology Arsene Wenger “voluntarily” gave after saying that birmingham player should of been banned for life for an accidental challenge! Like Arsene Wenger, Guthrie was told by Publicity Officers to give that apology and probably thinks he has done well to get away with a 3 match ban.

Sorry rant over, but it made me really angry! LOL

Chris – thank you very much for your comments. Its good to see real fans of the game voice their opinion. I’m all for tougher penalties and teaching a lesson. As you said Craig Fagan will be out for three months, potentially longer and he might feel this injury the rest of his life. Danny shouldn’t see a pitch until Craig Fagan is one-hundred per-cent. Let him serve a suspension after that.

I spent ages looking for a forum to write that on, it really made me angry and I am not very happy with Hull haha I think what you said was absolutely spot on, and I can understand people deserve second chances, but I agree with you its just another knock the English game is taking!

Nice to meet someone else with a sensible head on their shoulders!

Chris – don’t ruin your reputation by calling me “sensible” or anything. LOL. I’m just too old and irritable to mix words and whats right, is right. As I said I have went out of my way to support Danny in the past and I certainly think he’ll turn this around but for the good of the game and even Danny himself, the FA needed to show leadership. I suppose the most predictable thing out of all of this was they didn’t.

Time to get the match preview up – getting late. Thanks again for dropping-by.
