could Pedro Mendes be on his way?
By: j | January 6th, 2009While purely speculative at best, the Daily Mirror is reporting that Joe Kinnear is looking to the North once again, trying to lure Pedro Mendes from the Rangers on-loan with an option to purchase. The Portuguese international arrived from Portsmouth with a £3m transfer in August this past year and has been a solid addition to the ‘Gers.
While he would certainly be a extremely worthwhile addition to the Magpies, with the Rangers looking to reduce their bolster their bank vault and lower payroll costs a loan doesn’t seem like an option. Both clubs are at a crossroads in the transfer season as Newcastle is unlikely to make any acquisitions until they are able to bring in funds and the Rangers are looking to cut roster spots, increase cash reserves and reduce payroll costs. Along with Newcastle’s rumoured interest in Majdid Bougherra, I do not expect anything to come out of this unless Joe Kinnear brings in considerable cash and that would appear come at the expense of losing of Shay Given or up and coming players.
