Carling Cup match v Coventry City

By: j | August 25th, 2008

Kevin Keegan leads Newcastle into Coventry City of the Championship League for a second round Carling Cup match today.

The Magpies will be likely be without Oba Martins and Damien Duff who have minor injuries and are best served to sit and recover for this weekends match. Unfortunately and I truly mean that, Coventry’s brilliant ‘keeper Keiren Westwood will miss the match due to a concussion and dislocated thumb he suffered against Bristol City. Keiren is a superb young Goalkeeper, who I’m surprised hasn’t been wooed by a Premier League club yet and is a joy to watch. Cymru International Freddy Eastwood and Stephen Wright are equally out.

With Arsenal this weekend, this match has to be used correctly. While some might want to run out Michael Owen, this is a perfect time for Andy Carroll to see the heat of action. They can get through this but they need to use the wisely. Of course, maybe I should mention I’m ridiculously biased because I think Andy is a very promising striker and it would be a great chance to see him play with a great supporting group.

I will report on the match once it concludes.
