Becoming a Eurosnob; Otherwise Known as Embracing My Heritage
By: David | June 4th, 2007I was going to start this post off with a very interesting beginning, or at least maybe a story to get the mood right. But then I began thinking, what better way to start the Newcastle Blog then in the same way as Laurie over at the Galaxy blog. Yet, instead of showing a shift away from “Eurosnobbery” towards an understanding of American soccer, I am going the opposite way. Or at least I am going to try and embrace my roots.
As you most likely know, I am also the author of the Chivas USA blog on The Offside. But what you most likely did not know is that I am also 1/8th British, surprising isn’t it? It kind of threw me off track a few weeks ago, when I found out that some of my ancestors were from England, but it also explains why I like a good Pint and some fish and chips. This really has nothing to do with soccer (for now, do not get me wrong, I am not going to spend the coming weeks doing self analysis and forgoing the reporting of the team), rather it is a personal journey into the understanding of one’s heritage and the embracing of a team. This first post is the launching pad…
Well now that I have made a total embarrassment of myself and most likely confused the hell out of you, I would like to personally welcome you to the Newcastle Blog on The Offside!
When I first started watching soccer, the only British team I knew of was Manchester United. They were the most well known team in the States and I was a soccer virgin that did not know the ways of this sport. Yet as I began to watch more soccer, I realized there were more teams out there and the history of each team ran very deep. Thus after three years of watching soccer religiously I have expanded my soccer knowledge and as such, I have taken on the task of writing about Newcastle United. So join me in my journey of embracing my heritage, becoming a Newcastle United fan and watching the Mags dismantle that hated Sunderland team. Oh, I will also throw in some news and analysis too.
E I O E I O
Up the Premier League we go,
When we get to Europe,
This is what we’ll sing,
We are Geordies, super Geordies,
Robson is our King.
If you want to get to heaven when you die,
If you want to get to heaven when you die,
Wear a Black and White Bonnet,
With Newcastle written on it,
if you want to gett o heaven when you die.
We are the Mags ,we are the Mags,
We are, we are, we are The Mags.

glad to see someone write about the greatest footballing team the world has ever seen!
anyways, i have two small requests:
is there anyway to change the color format? teal and yellow don’t really represent the toon
also, we’re kind of listed under the coca-cola league on the side panel. it was funny to me when spurs and mackems were there, but it’s obviously not so hilarious anymorewell, good luck with the blog – i’m looking forward to reading it!
HA’WAY THE LADS!!!!!

Oh, David. I’m so sorry — I’m a Newcastle fan and, let me tell you, you’re in for a world of pain. Following the Mags is nothing but torture, and yet it’s impossible to stop. (In good news, Titus Bramble is finally gone. Huzzah!)
And yeah, what the hell is with the yellow and sky blue?

Dude. JOEY FREAKING BARTON?! I’d appreciate a rant on the matter, if you would. (Apparently NUFC’s love of lawbreakers remains no matter who’s on the bench.) Possible discussion topic: Has Big Sam been kidnapped by aliens and replaced by a pod?
(Viduka I’m ok with. The guy may be 90, but he can score. Plus, he’s not a thug who like to burn teammates with cigars and engage in other endearing, illegal behavior.)

On signings:
Viduka is a tremendous signing. He is truly class – scored 19 for the smoggies last year!!! And on a free to boot. this is great news.
I like the Barton signing – 24yo England internl. A true hooligan like Bowyer and Bellamy, but I’ll have him over Parker any day – and we raised ourselves about 2m pounds doing so. Parker was box-to-box and didn’t play as strong as he was capable of – I’ve never been a fan. Also glad BSA didn’t go for Stevie Sidwell who the rodent liked. Sidwell is the same player as Parker, just ginger.
Also, it seems we’ve won the race vs. BVB for Rozehnal. 3.3m pounds for a 26yo cb w/ 30 caps for Czech? Money well spent. Wasn’t he in the Ligue 1 First XI for PSG last season?
Not to mention the house cleaning – Smircek, Moore, Bernard, Onyewu, and of course TITus Bramble all gone. Luque supposedly leaving on loan, too. I wish we’d kept Sibi, but Viduka is a superior option.
BSA has made some important moves (or agreements to be done when window opens). So far, so good!!!
Now let’s re-sign Solano and get some fullbacks (Bridge and Baines) and hope for Ben Haim!
HA’WAY THE LADS!!!
